The Hong Kong High Performance Computing Association (HKHPC) has recently been featured in the Hong Kong Economic Journal, a prominent publication in the region. The article underscores the critical role of High Performance Computing (HPC) in propelling Hong Kong towards international recognition as a hub for innovation and technology.
Within the dynamic realm of innovation, Hong Kong is embarking on a transformative journey aimed at establishing itself as a global center for creativity and technological advancement. The HKSAR Government’s ‘Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint,’ unveiled near the close of 2022, outlines AI and data science, life and health technology, as well as advanced manufacturing and new energy technology as pivotal focus areas, all intricately interconnected with HPC. Notably, Artificial Intelligence (AI) currently dominates discussions within the innovation and technology sphere, with generative AI models like ChatGPT gaining widespread popularity globally. Such AI advancements are underpinned by HPC, with models such as ChatGPT relying on a vast ‘super brain’ composed of tens of thousands of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and Central Processing Units (CPUs) to process extensive volumes of text, images, and data.
Dr. Kam Fai Wong emphasizes in the article that the effective implementation of HPC hinges on adeptly applying and utilizing hardware and software expertise. This underscores the necessity of fostering collaboration among the government, industry, academia, research, and investment sectors to cultivate an HPC ecosystem and prioritize the development of HPC talents.
At the forefront of this evolutionary journey is the newly established Hong Kong High Performance Computing Association, comprising over 30 founding members, including representatives from universities, industry professionals, and legislators. Serving as a beacon of collaboration and excellence in the realm of high-performance computing, the association aims to cultivate a vibrant ecosystem for HPC exchange within Hong Kong, catalyzing innovation across industries, academia, and research institutions.
The association’s highly anticipated inauguration on December 10th is set to be a pivotal moment, uniting stakeholders keen on leveraging HPC’s transformative power. By providing a collaborative platform for cross-sector engagement, the association seeks to unlock fresh opportunities for applications, research, and talent development within the high-performance computing domain. This initiative underscores Hong Kong’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement, positioning the city as a leader in the dynamic landscape of high-performance computing. We extend a warm invitation to everyone to join and attend the inaugural celebration.
